We Defy Foundation Technique of the Day

We Defy Foundation

Grappling Mastery recently hosted a special event for our Disabled Veterans here in Lake County and Nationwide.  We had some good hard rolls and went over some great technique.  All proceeds went to We Defy Foundation which provides paid scholarships for disabled veterans who want to train their minds and bodies through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing.

Army Medic, Sgt. Tony Tindell in Afghanistan

“You hear a lot of stories about returning Combat vets. They’re Angry, Drinking, Depressed or have PTSD; well I’m glad to say this isn’t me and there one very distinct reason for that, besides my wife; Grappling Mastery. I was still in Ghazni Afghanistan when I contacted Professor Ruscio initially. I explained my need for a coping mechanism upon my return and he offered to help. I’ve been training with Grappling Mastery for four months now, since returning from the battlefield. In addition to BJJ he taught me patience, diligence a bit of humility… Read More”

Grappling Mastery’s Little Ninjas!

At Grappling Mastery, we teach kids the confidence, respect and self esteem they need to handle themselves in social situations.  Bullyproof Kids Classes consist of a combination of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Bang Muay Thai Kickboxing Classes.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will teach your child, among many other things, how to defend themselves without resorting to punches or kicks. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a Grappling style using joint locks and leverage rather than striking.  Our Bang Muay Thai, Little Ninjas Classes teach your child how to avoid strikes while effectively counterattacking.  Muay Thai Kickboxing IS a striking style and will teach how to properly punch and kick.

How to Submit a Wrestler with Judo and BJJ!

Grappling Mastery: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA Academy

I have a hard time writing this post because I love Wrestling.  The truth is though, wrestling doesn’t have submissions.  Combining Wrestling with BJJ is the best combination for Grappling and Self Defense.  Add in Great Muay Thai Kickboxing and you have a lethal combination for MMA.  That being said submitting a wrestler can be hard.  They have a good understanding of balance, body mechanics and have a good base.  They are fast, athletic, and aggressive.  Every fight starts standing and they are masters of takedowns and takedown defense.

To better understand wrestlers, I believe you need to actually learn wrestling.  The same can be said about beating a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu artist.  It’s been said, “The only thing that beats Jiu Jitsu, is Jiu Jitsu.”  I believe to beat any martial art, you should have some understanding of that martial art and it’s strategies and intentions.  That being said, the debate of which martial art is best is an invalid argument no matter which side you are on.  I love BJJ, Wrestling, and Muay Thai equally.  I think they all offer something the others don’t.  BJJ for submissions; wrestling for takedowns, defense, and scrambles; and Muay Thai for the awesome striking that it offers.

So just for fun.  Let’s look at a couple ways to submit someone when they try to go for a single leg takedown!

BJJ Technique: Omoplata Attacks and Counterattacks

Setting up Omoplata at the NAGA Pan American Championship finals against Brazilian Top Team MMA Instructor Wanderlei Camilo

The omoplata is a versatile submission that can be used to finish a fight or simply to regain position and turn the tides of a match. It can be used as an attack or a counterattack.  In the following videos, Professor Brian Ruscio demonstrates a few of the options that the Omoplata offers.  There are many more options and we will explore those in the future.  Remember to subscribe to our Youtube channel so you get to be the first to see our newest technique videos.

BJJ Technique: X-Guard Position

Grappling Mastery: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA Academy

The X-Guard is an advanced guard that has become a strong game for some Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters, like Marcelo Garcia.  The videos below will demonstrate some possibilities from the x-guard.  X-Guard is starting to become a lost or forgotten guard as single leg x and deep half become more popular, but it can still be used very effectively.

BJJ Technique: Loop Chokes

Grappling Mastery: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & MMA Academy

Loop Chokes are effective chokes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when wearing the GI (uniform).  The next few videos demonstrate various loop chokes from different situations.  Most loop chokes follow the same principle, capitalizing on the mistake of an opponent who hangs their head when in front of you.
